Tree rows, or windrows, provide a number of benefits to your land; windbreak, evaporation reduction, snow accumulation, livestock shelter, biodiversity, organic pest-control, organic fertilizer and much more.
Wind is a large contributor to the loss of moisture and evaporation. Tree rows will help to retain moisture and reduce erosion. Tree rows also provide the building blocks to biodiversity, biological control and an organic means of farming. Trees provide habitat for birds, pollinating insects and predatory insects. The birds and predatory insects act as a natural and organic pest control, resulting in pesticide reduction.
Carbon sequestration is the capture and long-term storage of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the soil. The addition of trees will increase this carbon capture, enriching your soil with the necessary nutrients for your crops to grow and acting as a natural and organic fertilizer.
Subsoiling is a soil management strategy used to minimize soil compaction and maximize crop production. The weight of equipment and repeated tilling over several years causes fine clay particles to migrate downward, binding & accumulating, creating a dense layer between the topsoil and subsoil called the "hardpan". The hardpan is problematic when it comes to oxygen, water and roots being able to penetrate the subsoil. A subsoiler is a tractor-mounted piece of equipment with large shanks that drive deep into the soil. The subsoiler is then pulled along, effectively breaking up the hardpan and lifting the soil to reduce compaction.
Tile drainage helps to remove excess surface and sub-surface water from one area and relocate to another. Tile is perforated plastic tubing that is buried in the ground to accumulate excess water and migrate that water elsewhere; reducing unseeded acres and dispersing excess water to benefit areas of your field that are lacking moisture. Different soil types will require different types of tile.
Wetlands, or sloughs, are areas of land that are saturated with water. While larger wetlands are an integral part of biodiversity and necessary habitat, the smaller sloughs that eventually dry up can be a nuisance to your farming practice. The Saskatchewan government has developed programs that are allowing farmers to manage lost seeded acres due to wetlands. Traditionally, this water is diverted into an outlet by surface drainage and served no benefit but to regain lost seeded acres. Settlers Ag Solutions is here to help manage your wetlands and unseeded acres. With the application of a tile drainage system, your sloughs will be utilized to benefit your farming operation via irrigation to increase your crop yield and enhance your agricultural practices.
